As if coexisting with other living creatures weren't complicated enough, buildings have started using social media to criticize their occupants.
The University of Mississippi introduced building automation to micro-blogging when it created Twitter feeds for its main facilities. The buildings themselves aren't jumping online and signing in to Twitter, but the school has started monitoring its energy consumption and telling its students when they're being wasteful. One building operator tweeted, 'umissgym: Is it just me, or is it hot in here?'
The project, undertaken with the help of smart grid company SmartSynch, is meant to ply the students' psychology.
'[The feeds] alter behavior to reduce electricity consumption and carbon emissions.'
Ole Miss' is hoping to save on its electricity bill with a new program that will be able to pinpoint the locations at which energy is being used excessively.
Companies like SmartSynch go around collecting billions and billions of bytes of info and use them to figure out how energy flows and then invent applications that will dictate how power will be used this century. Other companies that do this include IBM, Cisco, Google, Microsoft and GE.
Recently, many humans have been using Twitter to accomplish tasks. The site was used by protesters during the Iranian presidential election in June. More recently, the Kennedy family created a Twitter account to keep the American public abreast of the late senator's funeral arrangements.
