The Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) and the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA) did some research about what happens to people who get caught on Facebook, Twitter or (this would probably be the worst one) LinkedIn while at work.
Seems there's no standard operating procedure for managers who catch their personnel updating their statuses or playing FarmVille. Moreover, employers haven't really been monitoring such behavior in an official way. It's just the sort of thing where someone gets caught and then the boss says not to do that anymore, which isn't even the equivalent of the proverbial slap on the wrist.
When the internet first showed up about a decade ago, many companies foolishly thought that it was nothing special; that it would just go away. It will be interesting to see if these same companies will take a similar approach to the social networking trend. Fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me... you can't get fooled again.
