Websites like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook are where web surfers are exposed to a large portion of online advertising.
The analytics firm comScore released the results of a study conducted during the month of June that reveals approximately one out of every five internet ads is found on a social networking site. Of this percentage, four out of five are found on either MySpace or Facebook.
'Because the top social media sites can deliver high reach and frequency against target segments at a low cost, it appears that some advertisers are eager to use social networking sites as a new advertising delivery vehicle,' said senior vice president of comScore Jeff Hackett.
The comScore study showed that AT&T advertised most on social networking sites during the month of June. The company had more than 2 billion ad impressions on such sites, which represented about 30 percent of its total number of display advertisements for that month.
Facebook is now the internet's fourth-most visited website. Placing an ad on a social networking site is considerably less expensive than doing so on a portal like Yahoo or AOL, according to Reuters.
