Marines say no social networking

The Marines really don't want their personnel going to social networking sites (SNS) like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace for personal purposes.

Although it uses SNSs as recruiting tools, the Marines Corps says that for security reasons, its men and women should not visit the websites recreationally if on a military computer, according to Federal Computer Week (FCW).

Now other parts of the Department of Defense might start saying the same thing, although there's also been talk in support of allowing access to the sites.

According to Marines.mil, the nature of SNSs 'exposes unnecessary information to adversaries and provides an easy conduit for information leakage.'

But FCW says the Marines have a parochial view of SNSs. We now live in a world built on information sharing, and the military shouldn't put its personnel at a disadvantage by blocking the platforms upon which people communicate today.

The Ministry of Defense in the U.K. encourages its members to stay in touch with their families and friends using SNSs, according to FCW. The Ministry also says that while doing so, it is very important to release information cautiously.ADNFCR-2087-ID-19366931-ADNFCR
